Glazkov suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament on his right knee at Barclays Center in Brooklyn to hand Martin the vacant IBF heavyweight title by default. The Ukrainian had lost the opening two rounds and most of the third when the fight was halted and the IBF are not considering a review into the contest.
“We are not ordering an immediate rematch between Martin and Glazkov.” IBF Chairman Lindsey Tucker exclusively informed World Boxing News.
“Also, Glazkov came out of the number one position when he lost to Martin and is no longer considered the mandatory option.”
Asked whether Charles Martin will be allowed to fight a voluntary or indeed unify with Deontay Wilder as rumoured, Tucker added: “Under our rules, a champion can unify with the WBA, WBC or WBO Champion, but at the moment Martin has no mandatory.”
Martin, 29, was seen shaking hands with WBA, WBO and IBO champion Tyson Fury whilst celebrating his win at ringside, although sharing the bill with WBC holder Wilder would suggest a unification between those two is more likely.
Add to that the fact that Fury is tied up facing a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko and Wilder v Martin at some point over the summer would be a money-spinning event for both fighters to consider.
For Glazkov, the 31 year-old faces a few months recovery time before he even contemplates a return and ‘Czar’ may also have some ground to make up in the rankings once he finally gets back to full fitness.
