The Japanese fighter, who held world titles at flyweight and super-flyweight, last fought when losing a split decision to Victor Ruiz on Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions in Texas and was informed by doctors a short time afterwards that he should end his time in the sport.
“It would have been tough to carry on with only one eye, but I have had the best boxing career,” Kameda told a gathering of reporters at Narita airport, including The Japan Times, after arriving home from the United States where he had been staying for his wedding ceremony.
“People said I would never be a world champion. I never expected I would be a world champion twice. Now I want to travel the world with my wife and hopefully find a new dream.
“It was frightening to get in the ring,” he added.
Kameda’s announcement follows on from 28 year-old brother Koki’s recent statement that he himself is considering retirement and would leave bantamweight Tomoki, 24, as the only active fighter out of the ex-world champion siblings.
All three brothers have suffered defeats in their last bouts.
