Pacquiao, 36, stands down from his 20-year boxing stint on April 9 of 2016 with a final appearance at the MGM Grand and Arum believes the Filipino is doing the right thing ahead of a run for Senator in his home country.
“Manny told me this would be his last fight and I’m not sad about it because he’s going on to a political career which will require a lot of mental acuity, so you don’t want him to stay in boxing too long,” Arum told ESPN.
“It’s a real job and if Manny is serious about wanting to be president, these six years in the senate would be like an audition and for him to show his people that he really is a serious politician.”
“If he stays in boxing a little too long his mental faculties might be somewhat impaired,” he added.
Currently, there are five opponents in the frame to oppose the ‘Pacman’ in his swansong clash, although 140 pound champion Terence Crawford is currently the frontrunner ahead of Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley.
A rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr has long been ruled out by Arum.
