Hatton: Khan can beat Floyd, Pacquiao a chess match

Although Mayweather is still yet to confirm that Berto will be his opponent on September 12, Khan has already admitted defeat in claiming the chance and Hatton thinks ‘Money’ made the right career move.

Mayweather is aiming to equal Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 retirement record in what is scheduled to be his final Showtime outing and Hatton sympathises with the decision to avoid Khan – even though the Olympic gold medallist in number one in the rankings.

“People say Mayweather mess Amir around, but I don’t think he did really as it’s not like Amir has been made the mandatory,” Hatton exclusively told World Boxing News.

“If Floyd doesn’t want to fight him then he doesn’t want to fight him and he doesn’t have to fight him. I think if I was Floyd I wouldn’t want to fight him either. I’ve said it many times I think Amir has the style to beat him and he beats him with speed for me.

“Why take the fight with Khan when it’s a potentially difficult fight for Floyd and he’s closing in on his career end? I think that’s why he’s opted for Berto in the end.”

Khan, 28, has since turned his attention to a massive clash with former training partner Manny Pacquiao in the spring of 2016, another ex-Hatton foe, but one that the ‘Hitman’ would relish his compatriot pitting himself against next year.

“It’s a good fight Amir Khan v Manny Pacquiao – a chess match,” he predicted. “I think they would both try and use their speed and movement to win it.

“It’s good that Amir wants to fight the best and I believe that Pacquiao is still one of the best.

“I think it will be a bit of a fencing match style-wise and It’s a fight you’d pay to see, definitely,” added Hatton.

Pacquiao is said to be recovering well from shoulder surgery in the wake of his loss to Mayweather on May 2 and Khan has already confirmed that contact has been made by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum regarding the two sharing a ring in the coming months.
