Chilemba one half of WBC title final eliminator for Stevenson shot

The 28 year-old, who is set to return to action this month, ended Vasily Lepikhin’s undefeated record in fine style last March to cement his place as the number one contender with the World Boxing Council.

‘Golden Boy’ has been very vocal in calling on Stevenson to give him an immediate shot at the title, but as the Haitian-Canadian scouts for his next opponent and seemingly overlooks the Main Events fighter, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that Chilemba will eventually be able to earn the chance outright.

“The World Boxing Council is going to announce a final elimination bout and that includes Isaac Chilemba,” Sulaiman exclusively told World Boxing News.

“The thing is, Sergey Kovalev was the mandatory so we were left without a mandatory (when he pulled out of purse bids to fight Adonis Stevenson).

“The elimination fight should be done in July as we have a review due on the half-year report.

“Everything has been transparent, it’s an open floor. We release it, we show it and we comply. This will be the case when that elimination is final.”

The fighter himself explained his relief at the WBC’s recent ruling: “I’ll be a very happy man when the WBC do that. I’ll finally get that chance I deserve as the number one contender.

“I’m fighting now on 25th July on the Kovalev v Mohammedi card, but my opponent is not yet confirmed. I’ll love to go for the WBC belt in my next fight as I want to fight Adonis Stevenson.

Chilemba’s foe for his upcoming ten-rounder at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas should be officially revealed by the Malawi-born boxer’s promoter Kathy Duva over the next few days.
