Williams, 41, ended a run of four straight defeats against little-known Varak by stopping the Czech in three rounds on April 11 and now aims to make it two in a row against ex-Austrian and German title holder Sidon at the Konzerthalle on Saturday.
‘The Brixton Bomber’ is famed for his 2004 knockout of a faded Mike Tyson in Kentucky which set up a failed attempt to dethrone top division ruler Vitali Klitschko five months later, although UK fans will also remember Williams for different reasons. In October 2000, Williams faced Mark Potter for the vacant British and Commonwealth belts in London, but dislocated his right shoulder early in the fight. Williams amazingly continued using only his left whilst his right arm dangled uselessly and went on to produce a corker of a shot that stopped Potter in the sixth round.
Despite losing his British boxing license in 2010 when losing badly to Dereck Chisora, Williams has carried on his career using alternative European approval but has only recorded six wins from 22 bouts amidst calls for him to retire.
The Londoner has admitted in the past that he just can’t give up the sport he loves and now faces a 52 year-old opponent in Sidon who has been halted early every time he has stepped up in class against the likes of Odlanier Solis, Alexander Dimitrenko and Andrzej Warzwyk.
Sidon came into boxing late at the age of 36 way back in 1999, although has struggled to make any headway at the top level and should be an ideal opportunity for Williams to record back-to-back victories for the first time since 2011 in what will be his 74th pro fight.
