Theophane rules out UK return, aims to finish career in US

‘Treasure’ won the coveted UK championship in February 2011 beating European contender Lenny Daws on points, before successfully defending it against Jason Cook and Ben Murphy in late stoppage victories.

Theophane, who had previously fluctuated between Britain and the States since 2008, had aimed to claim the British belt for keeps before returning to America to fulfil his dream of fighting for a world title.

To successfully navigate the first part of his plan, the 34 year-old needed to overcome third challenger Darren Hamilton in May 2012, although things didn’t go the way Theophane wanted and he lost a tight points decision.

Instead of balloting for a rematch, which by his own admissions is not his style, Theophane instead heading back across the Atlantic and into a lucrative deal with Floyd Mayweather’s ‘The Money Team’ promotional outfit – from which he hasn’t looked back since.

Six wins and a close split decision loss from seven bouts followed and Theophane is back in action on April 30 in Las Vegas against Mexican Mahonri Montes with no regrets about not finishing what he started back in his homeland four years ago.

“Fighting in the UK again is not on my mind. I did what I did there. I’d be happy never to fight there again,” Theophane exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I wasn’t appreciated when I was there so I’ve nothing to prove. I’ve always enjoyed fighting abroad more than fighting at home anyway.

“America has shown me love ever since I came here 10 years ago and I’m with a great team now so I’m making the most of the final years of my career,” he added.
