Calls to make a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao have been heard time and again since both entered the same weight division back in 2009, although ‘Money’ says the fans demand for the contest has meant 2015 was the perfect time to seal the deal.
“Everything in life is about timing. I have no regrets that this fight didn’t take place five years ago. I didn’t think it was that big then, but it continued to get bigger and bigger. Not just in boxing, but outside of the sport. Pacquiao has continued to grow outside of the sport. We didn’t need to rush anything,” said Mayweather, who expects to record some big pay-per-view numbers come May 2nd.
“I can’t say that this matchup is about hype. This is real life. This is two future Hall of Famers in a mega-fight. I’ve done record breaking numbers before and it looks like we’re going to do it again.”
On his own future in the sport beyond his September contract with Showtime, Mayweather added: “I’ve got one more fight on my contract (after Pacquiao, but) I couldn’t be happier with Showtime and CBS.”
If Mayweather takes the victory next month the American moves to 48-0 and just one away from Rocky Marciano’s undefeated retirement mark – with the final fight of his deal set to take place on September 12.
