Pacquiao cautious on Algieri KO, ready for attempts at Marquez repeat

The 35 year-old’s trainer Freddie Roach has already stated that underdog Algieri has no chance of causing any upset, whilst advisor Michael Koncz is convinced the fight won’t go past six rounds.

It’s been almost exactly five years since Pacquiao last scored a knockout against Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand, although the lengthy absence doesn’t mean the ‘Pacman’ will go looking for a 39th early finish in Macau on November 22.

“We cannot go into the fight thinking about the knockout,” said Pacquiao. “A knockout will not change the result of the fight as long as we get the win.

“What we are trying to do right now is to get the focus in training and for the fight that people want to see. Chris Algieri is a very dangerous fighter and we are taking nothing for granted in this training camp.

“I am confident that I am going to win the fight. I know he is doing his best in training and I am doing my best in training so the fans are going to see a good fight.

“We are not taking him lightly for this fight and we are training hard for this fight because of what he proved in the Ruslan fight.

“I am still hungry and I am doing what I did before – what we did in Wild Card training in Hollywood. That’s what we are doing right now and it is good.”

Predictions of a shock win for Algieri are few and far between as the unbeaten former 140lb title holder heads into the biggest night of his life, and Pacquiao brushed off any talk of another humiliating knockout like the one he suffered against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Algieri’s size may allow him to land sweeping punches like the one Marquez laid Pacquiao flat out with in their fourth meeting in 2012, but Pacquiao isn’t worried as even latest opponent Tim Bradley couldn’t emulate what the Mexican achieved.

“It not be the first time as it has happened to me like that in the Marquez fight. They have tried it and I know what I am going to do for this fight.

“We started hard and we practice hard in the gym – different styles and different strategies and I believe we can use it in the fight. So there is nothing to worry about that. They are going to watch that fight and review that fight and I will be ready.

“I think I have a way if he throws a lot of jabs. I can move faster than him so I don’t need to worry about that,” Pacquiao said.
