Mathews could well be considered for a future clash with WBA champion Richar Abril at some point in 2015, and if that happens, nobody could begrudge the tough Scouser the opportunity at the back end of an entertaining career.
In the co-feature, former world bantamweight champion Paul Butler made a successful return to super-flyweight with a 100-91 win on points over Ismael Garnica. Butler, 25, pushed his record to 17-0 and is now set to challenge Zolani Tete for the IBF super-flyweight championship early next year.
Also on the card, home favourite Liam Smith stopped Zoltan Sera in three rounds, whilst Chris Eubank Jr eased to a second round warm-up win over German Omar Siala and now moves on to a huge domestic scrap with Billy Joe Saunders on November 29.
In the fight of the night, Jack Catterall produced the best performance of his career in defeating Thomas Stalker as the unbeaten light-welterweight halted the Liverpool fighter in eight rounds. Catterall put the ex-Olympian on the canvas twice early on, and as Stalker rallied in the mid-rounds, swiftly put an end to the contest in the eighth session.
Earlier, Kevin Satchell made history by winning the European flyweight title with a majority decision points victory over Valery Yanchy. Scores were 117-112, 112-110 and 114-114 as ‘Satch’ became the first Liverpudlian in a quarter oif a century to take home an EBU championship.
Liam Williams knocked out Stepan Horvath in the second round to improve to 11-0-1 with 6 KO’s, whilst James ‘Jazza‘ Dickens also stopped Georgie Gachechilad in two rounds to move on to a British super-bantamweight title fight with Josh Wale. MasonCartwright defeated Duane Green over four rounds 40-36 to make a winning start to his ring career as another debutant MichaelJoynson made an impressive start to his career by blasting out Alex Bazza in just over 30 seconds of action.
