The 19 year-old, who suffered a cut in the bout, proved too powerful for the Georgian leading to the referee calling a halt at 2:14 of the fourth. Fury suffered a cut earlier in the fight due to an elbow by Gegeshidze, although father and trainer Peter revealed that the nick happened during training in the build-up.
“Hughie sustained a cut above his left eye in sparring six days ago and had it glued, but it came undone after being elbowed by Gegeshidze in last nights fight,” explained father and trainer Peter. “Hughie was extra cautious to protect it and did not want to rush in, but Gegeshidze was so negative we had to close it down and so the cut opened.”
Fury will now have to take 28 days out to allow the cut to heal meaning a scheduled fight later this month with Danny Hughes has to be shelved. The former amateur star has a silver lining though as the news was confirmed by Team Fury this morning that Hughie could face Herve Hubeaux for the WBC Youth heavyweight title on December 14 in Belgium.
Hubeaux, 21, claimed the title in October with a unanimous decision win over Tamas Bajzath in Namur and has been offered the chance to defend his belt with Fury making the trip over to familiar territory next month. Whispers coming from Peter Fury are that the Belgian has asked for more time to prepare, meaning Fury could still fight Hughes or another contender for the vacant belt.
Hughie harbours hopes of beating Mike Tyson’s record of becoming the youngest ever world champion and has a year left to do it, with the WBC route seemingly the one chosen by the 6ft 6ins puncher as current champion Vitali Klitschko winds down his lengthy career.
