The 32 year-old, who lost his unbeaten record in a brutal encounter with the Ireland-based Cuban at Madison Square Garden, was put in a medically induced coma after undergoing emergency brain surgery and had part of his skull removed.

Promoter and friend Sampson Lewkowicz had told WBN yesterday that Mago’s ‘life was in the hands of God’ and son Nathan then confirmed the news of the stroke from his bedside.

Opponent Mike Perez issued a statement himself expressing his concern for Abdusalamov after trading blow-for-blow with the southpaw in the HBO televised clash on the Golovkin v Stevens undercard.

Abdusalamov’s injuries have prompted his widened team to set up a trust fund to pay for his continued care and help his family, with all of boxing pulling for the talented puncher to come through his toughest fight.
