The Russian went ten brutal rounds with Irish-based Cuban Mike Perez at Madison Square Garden on a big HBO televised bill and had initially gone to hospital due to pain in his hand and face, according to Sampson Boxing’s Nathan Lewkowicz.
After tests, it was revealed that Abdusalamov had a blood clot in his brain and doctors then performed the surgery before putting the 32 year-old in medically-induced coma where he remains at the moment.
Abdusalamov’s current state of health is reported to be stable, although the rugged southpaw remains in the intensive care unit at Roosevelt Hospital.
Broadcaster’s HBO issued the following statement:
“The thoughts and prayers of all of us at HBO Sports are with Magomed Abdusalamov. We are grateful for the medical care he is receiving here in New York City and out of respect for Magomed and his family, we will wait for any official updates on his condition before making any further statements.”
Both previously undefeated boxers laid it all on the line for the duration of the engaging contest, with Perez eventually gaining a unanimous victory on the scorecards before this sad turn of events.
