WBN Preview: Canelo can have Trout for supper after hefty struggle

The 22 year-old WBC champion, who’s record stands at a jaw-dropping 41-0-1, would have ‘no doubt’ been an out of sight favourite to win the Alamodome clash had it not been for Trout’s impressive win over a faded Miguel Cotto in December, although Alvarez is widely expected to come through the tough American and add the WBA belt to his collection.

Trout, 27, is training harder than ever for what promises to be another gruelling twelve round contest, but whether he has the power to fend-off or trouble the hardened ‘Canelo’ is the only question as Alvarez will continually maraud forward. The New Mexican will have to attempt to stop Alvarez from coming at him with wave after wave of attacks and he will find out early on that there is a considerable difference between a young fresh champion and an old battle-weary fighter like Cotto.

A bright start will be needed by Trout as Alvarez will want to dictate the pace of the bout from the start, but whether he can put that into practice will come in to play when the first bell rings.

I don’t see it all plain sailing for Alvarez though as Trout certainly has the talent and does belong in these sort of fights after taming Cotto as an underdog, but ultimately the green belt holder is just too big and strong at the weight and it may take the likes of a Floyd Mayweather to relieve the Jalisco bruiser of his perfect record.

An entertaining clash will certainly be on the cards for those lucky enough to have tickets for tonight’s Golden Boy card, although I can only see a points win or late stoppage for Alvarez as Trout struggles to get to grips with the heavy-handed future pound for pound prospect.
