New WBA champion eyeing unification

Guillermo Rigondeaux is ready to unify the super-bantamweight title in just his tenth fight as the Cuban has set his sights on taking on the winner of Nonito Donaire v Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. on February 4th in Texas.

The 31 year-old amateur star is wasting no time since moving to the US to pursue his professional dream, winning the NABA title in just his third fight and following it up with an interim title in his seventh outing, before defeating Rico Ramos last weekend to become WBA champion in his ninth.

The heavy-hitting southpaw is now aiming to make even more of a name for himself by targeting the WBO super-bantamweight title and would prefer to meet multi-weight belt holder Donaire, 29, in the near future.

“I know, for sure that Nonito knows what kind of fighter I am,” The new world champion told Examiner.com.

“I don’t talk about fighters, I just want to fight. The fight that I most want is Nonito, but what I want is the winner of Nonito and Vazquez. Right now I cannot say only Nonito because we have to respect Vazquez. It’s the winner of the fight.”

Rigondeaux has stopped seven of his nine opponents so far on the back of a glittering career in the unpaid ranks where ‘Rigo’ claimed Olympic gold at the 2000 and 2004 games in Sydney and Athens respectively.
