Two-time British lightweight title challenger John Watson steps back in the ring next month in Wolverhampton is he looks to erase losses to Gavin Rees and Anthony Crolla from his memory.

The 28 year-old was noted as one of the best prospects in the country in late 2010, with an 13-0 record and the British title in his sights against former world champion Rees in Newport.

An eleven-round war with the Welshman ensued with Watson coming out of the fight with his first loss, but with his reputation enhanced and was ready for a rematch with ‘The Rock’ in February of last year.

Rees, 31, was forced to withdraw from the fight and little-known youngster Anthony Crolla stepped from super-featherweight to take the challenge at late notice and pulled of a shock to take Rees’ vacant crown and inflict a second knockout loss in a row on Watson.

The likeable Scouser has now regrouped though as he told WBN recently and gone back to his roots at light-welterweight as he plots a quick-fire comeback in the eight-man tournament next month.

“I've made a few changes to my teamand I am now working closer to home at Oliver's gym in Manchester,” Watson told World Boxing News.

“I am also working with strength and conditioning coach Brian Gilgeous at Bodyzone gym L1, who is also advising me on dietary requirements.

“I am back up at light-welterweight where I boxed as an amateur from age 18 and at the weight where I enjoyed success in the amateurs.”

Watson is still ranked in the British top 10 at lightweight and with his move up to 140lbs, will be hoping a tournament win at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton will catapult him to a shot at British champion Ashley Theophane.

“I see prizefighter as a great opportunity to bring me back at a good level,” said Watson.

“You have to be motivated by the big cash prize and the chance to hopefully get back into title contention and I am working hard for that and really enjoying my training. I can't wait for Feb 11th!”
