‘Funtime’ could face the ‘Hitter’

WBO Inter-Continental welterweight champion Frankie Gavin could take on former WBC light-welterweight title holder Junior Witter in 2012 after the contest was put to purse bids by the British Board of Boxing Control.

Gavin, 26, is lined up to fight at the end of the month at Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester, after which, he would be stepping up to face the Prizefighter finalist if the contest can be agreed.

Frank Warren currently promotes the Birmingham-born former world amateur champion and it will be interesting to see if 37 year-old Witter is seen as good match-up at 147lbs.

‘Funtime’ Frankie has always insisted he would move down a weight to light-welterweight but has consistently struggled to make the weight and a bout with Witter could give him a considerable rankings boost if he wishes to remain at welterweight.
