Hopkins/Dawson unification lined up for Cleverly v Bellew winner

Warren and Schaefer hoping to pair two champions

Tonight's winner of the Nathan Cleverly WBO light-heavyweight title defence against arch-rival Tony Bellew could be in line to meet the winner of Hopkins v Dawson later in the evening.

Both fighters know that an added incentive awaits (not that they needed it) when they square up at the Echo Arena in Liverpool’s Docklands as promoter Frank Warren has held early discussions with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer about the winner potentially facing WBC belt holder Bernard Hopkins or Chad Dawson.

Warren met Schaefer in August to discuss a possible unification bout with the oldest world boxing champion of all time or his younger challenger.

"I think that the fans will be in for something special when they clash," said Warren.
"It is no secret that there is very little love loss between them from their past history together.
"I'm in discussions with Hopkins' promoter Richard Schaefer about a potential fight with the winner so it's a massive incentive for both guys."
It is not inconceivable that a UK v US contest could take place on British soil as ‘B-Hop’ has commented in recent months that he would be willing to fight in Britain and the 46 year-old may be persuaded to travel for a unification with the eventual victor of the undefeated light-heavyweights.
