Mundine and Alvarez fight it out for interim belt

‘The Man’ and 'El Espanol' square off in New South Wales

Two-weight world champion Anthony Mundine’s proposed WBA title shot at Austin Trout is in sight as the Australian is set to meet former WBA interim champion Rigoberto Alvarez on home soil in Newcastle, Australia today.

The 36 year-old had been in negotiations to challenge the WBA champion directly last August as Trout, 25, told WBN that a contract had been sent to the former IBO middleweight champion but was never signed.

“All I want is Mundine’s camp to stop playing with us and sign the contract so we can get the media involved in promoting this fight,” Trout told World Boxing News on July 14th.

Mundine will now have to face the man he originally was supposed to fight in early 2011 but a shocking loss to Australian Contender champion Garth Wood ended his WBA title chances at that stage. 'The Man' did eventually avenge the defeat in April this year to gain another interim chance and could face Trout in early 2012 if he can get past the Mexican.

Alvarez, 33, is the older sibling of WBC 154lb champion Saul Alvarez and will be aiming to become the second member of the family to hold a light-middleweight title belt.

‘El Espanol’ lost to Trout in a one-sided points loss in his native Mexico in February and will hope to rectify his defeat against Mundine at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
