‘Chunky’ wants world champion status by 2012

Former British champion James DeGale is sure he can be a world champion within the next twelve months as his unexpected European super-middleweight title shot against Poland’s Piotr Wilczewski tonight draws nearer.

The 25 year-old from Harlesden suffered his first career loss to arch-rival George Groves in his last bout and promoter Warren has worked miracles to get him the EBU title shot immediately, which DeGale says has put him right back on track to be a world champion next year.

“There’s no hangover and I’m just looking forward to this fight now,” DeGale told The Mirror.

“Challenging for the European title in my next fight is a fantastic chance to get myself back in the big picture.

“My plan is to become world champion before the Olympics. This fight puts me back on course to do that. I want to box again in December and then go for a world title.”

Wilczewski, 33, who has received little coverage in the build-up, boats a 29-1 record with 10 stoppages but steps up considerably against the Olympic gold medallist.
