Gavin Rees set to defend European title against Derry Mathews

English belt holder meets former world champion


Former WBU 122lb champion 'Dirty' Derry Mathews will get the chance to claim the European lightweight title when he squares-up to belt holder Gavin Rees at the Newport Leisure Centre in Wales tonight. 

Mathews, 27, has won eight of nine bouts since comnig out of a semi-retirement in 2010 and has impressed with points wins over Scott Lawton and Choi, along with stoppages of Stephen Jennings and George Watson.

31 year-old Welshman Rees claimed the EBU belt in June by defeating Irishman Andy Murray in Cardiff and will now put it on the line against the Prizefighter super-featherweight finalist.

‘The Rock’ held the WBA light-welterweight crown for almost a year after claiming it in 2007 and will represent Mathews’ toughest career test after moving down to lightweight.

Also on the bill, Bradley Pryce hopes to stop a rot of two straight defeats against Danny Butler in his first bout at middleweight and undefeated featherweight Ricky Owen looks to continue his perfect 14-0 record against Newport's own Robbie Turley.
