WBC champion to defend belt in Texas

Middleweight world title holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s first defence of his WBC crown will be on November 19th at the Reliant Arena in Texas, USA against former IBO champion Peter Manfredo.

The match-up next month will represent the unbeaten Chavez’s 46th professional bout as he sets off on his first world title reign against the likable Rhode Islander.

Manfredo, 30, will challenge for his third world title after unsuccessfully travelling to the UK in 2007 when campaigning at super-middleweight, losing in three rounds to Joe Calzaghe and a defeat to Sakio Bika for the IBO 168lb belt in 2008.

He has since moved down to his more natural weight and did manage to hold the IBO version of the 160lb for eight months from May last year. The popular fighter was eventually stripped of the title in January this year for not facing the IBO’s mandatory challenger.

The former Contender Series star has six loses on his 43-fight record, four of which where at the 168lb limit, but has bags of experience to back up his eleven-year pro career and can boast twenty victories inside schedule.

‘The Pride of Providence’ currently finds himself on a six-bout unbeaten run and will hope to top off a colourful career with a WBC title.
