Corley faces Provodnikov in Russia

Former WBO Light-Welterweight Champion DeMarcus Corley has never been a fighter who ducks an opponent but the question that has to be asked is when will “Chop Chop” finally call it a day.

The 37 year-old veteran has been in the ring with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Zab Judah, Miguel Cotto and  Devon Alexander, all of which are losses on Corley's record but the Washington fighter has fought on well-past his sell-by date..

A loss to Thomas Dulorme last June was the eighteenth reverse of Corley’s fifteen-year career but interestingly; seventeen of the defeats have come in his last 26 bouts - meaning the American has only won nine fights in eight years.

The 56-fight veteran held the world title from 2001 to 2003 only losing it on a close split decision to a peak Zab Judah and everything from then on seemed to fall apart for likeable southpaw.

He did give Marcos Maidana a tough fight in August last year in Argentina but that was just one high-point (if you can call a loss a high-point) in a series of defeats and only the fact that he keeps taking fighters the distance should give him any reason, if one at all, to carry on.

It is a shame to see a once-great champion slipping into the journeyman role as he takes to the road for defeat after defeat, with another on the cards tonight and hopefully soon he will hang up his gloves.
