Showtime contemplating Bantamweights tournament
Super-Six could turn into Super-Eight
American TV sports network Showtime is planning another Super-Six style tournament at Bantamweight after the propelled success of the first Super-Middleweight tournament which is currently ongoing.
The first tournament, which includes Britian’s Carl Froch and included Jermain Talyor (now retired) amongst others has been hailed a triumph and plans are now being made to extend the series to another weight division.
Showtime are reportedly looking the exciting Bantamweight division, which would include the likes of WBC Flyweight Champion Vic Darchinyan and WBC and WBA Bantamweight Champion Fernando Montiel.
Executives at Showtime are looking to change the format to a single elimination tournament which would mean the Super-Six would turn into the Super-Eight tournament or would be re-named.
The current series is nearing the semi-final stages with Arthur Abraham of Germany taking on Carl Froch of the UK and Andre Ward is squaring up against fellow American Andre Dirrell with WBC Champion Mikkel Kessler to fight the last of the group stage bouts against Allan Green.
Jermain Taylor pulled out of the tournament after a first group stage knockout loss to Arthur Abraham of has since retired from boxing altogether.
The current Super Six, along with Britain’s successful Prizefighter tournament series has been a welcome addition to the boxing scene and there could be a lot more to come.
